Pierre LAGRANGE the Ophthalmologist

Postcard of Pierre Lagrange

Pierre-Felix Lagrange was a native of Soumensac. He was born on the 22nd January 1857 and died on the 22nd April 1928. He was a renowned ophthalmologist and has a surgical treatment for glaucoma named after him. “Lagrange’s operation” is a combined irridectomy and sclerectomy which is performed, presumably, with the aid of Lagrange scissors, which you can still buy.
A bust to him exists in Soumensac, it’s a replacement for the one that was installed in 1926 and melted down by the Germans in the Second World War.
