The Novelist Marguerite DURAS

OK, so she was born Marguerite Donnadieu in Saigon on 4th April 1914, so what’s the connection? On the publication of her first novel, “Les Impudents”, in 1943, she decided to use the nom de plume of Marguerite Duras. The Duras was in honour of her father who came from the area – from Pardaillan to be exact – and where she lived for a couple of years in the early 1920s. She went on to become a prolific writer – winner of the Prix Goncourt in 1984 – and film director. She died on the 3rd March 1996 and is buried in Montparnasse.

There is a plaque, with a quotation from “Les Impudents” to her memory in Pardaillan. And a square in Duras bears her name.

It look as though her cinematic work is being re-appraised. In July & August 2024 the ICA held a comprehensive retrospective of her works. For a less than favourable (although very amusing) review of “Let Cinema Go To Its Ruin: The Cinema of Marguerite Duras” see the article by Igor Toronyi-Lalic in The Spectator.
